Camagüey, Feb 21 - With the aim of providing practical tools and strengthening the bonds of mutual support, Caritas Camagüey recently hosted a meeting with the support group for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The session, which took place in an environment of respect and trust, sought to offer valuable information for the comprehensive well-being of the participants, as well as to reaffirm the institution's commitment to solidarity with this sector of the community.
During the activity, attendees shared experiences and received specialized guidance to face the daily challenges associated with their health condition.

Psychologist Diana Cervantes García facilitated a central debate around the safety of food, a crucial aspect for people living with HIV due to their immune system.
In an open and participatory dialogue, Cervantes García explained the importance of properly handling food to prevent foodborne illnesses, which could complicate their state of health. The space allowed those present to clear up doubts and become aware of how small actions in the kitchen can make a big difference in their quality of life.

Subsequently, international chef and professor at the Culinary School Gregorio Hidalgo Vera offered a practical conference focused on advice regarding food cooking, preparation hygiene, and dish presentation.
Hidalgo Vera highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced and safe diet, adapted to the specific needs of that group. He emphasized that proper cooking eliminates dangerous microorganisms, while good presentation stimulates the appetite and contributes to emotional well-being. His recommendations, based on international standards, were very well received by the attendees.

One of the key moments of the meeting was the practical demonstration on the correct way to wash hands, a simple but vital measure to prevent infections.
Hidalgo Vera explained that maintaining rigorous hand hygiene before cooking and consuming food can prevent the transmission of dangerous bacteria and viruses.
He insisted on the proper technique: using water and soap, rubbing all surfaces for at least 20 seconds, including between the fingers and under the nails, and drying with a clean towel or disposable paper. This habit, reinforced during the workshop, stands as the first protective barrier against foodborne diseases.

As part of the session, an attractive exhibition of dishes made from fruits and vegetables was held, which demonstrated the versatility and nutritional value of these foods. Participants were able to appreciate creative ways to incorporate fresh products into their daily diet, highlighting their benefits for strengthening defenses and maintaining good overall health.

The display, prepared by the culinary specialist, became a visual and practical incentive for group members to adopt healthier and more varied eating habits.

The meeting concluded with a positive assessment by the organizers and attendees, who highlighted the usefulness of the topics discussed and the warmth of the exchange space. Representatives of Caritas Camagüey reiterated their commitment to continue supporting people living with HIV/AIDS, and announced that these types of activities will be repeated periodically to continue offering comprehensive support. Initiatives like this reinforce the importance of education and solidarity in building a more inclusive and healthier society. (Text and photos: Maykel Torres La Rosa/Radio Cadena Agramonte)
