Havana, Feb 23 - Members of the Mexican Chapter of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity (REDH, for its acronym in Spanish) addressed an open letter to intellectuals, artists, academics, and university students in the United States, in support of Cuba against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade, aggravated by the energy siege imposed by the government of that country.
The letter, according to the portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cubaminrex, recalled the tradition of American figures who opposed wars of conquest and military aggressions, such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Henry Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, as well as the anti-fascist fighters of the Lincoln Brigade in defense of the Spanish Republic and those who denounced the Vietnam War in their time.
The signatories echoed the call of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac, for its acronym in Spanish) to the global intellectual and creative community to denounce the economic, commercial, and financial blockade in force since 1960, and the recent energy siege applied against the island, classified as an attempt at genocide.
The letter urged the American academic and cultural community to deploy actions of solidarity with the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, and particularly with Cuba, which they recognized as a bastion of regional dignity.
Among the signatories are Miguel Álvarez, Alicia Castellanos, Ana Esther Ceceña, Carlos Fazio, Luis Hernández Navarro, Gilberto López y Rivas, Josefina Morales and other prominent Mexican intellectuals, who reaffirmed their commitment to the defense of peace and the self-determination of peoples.
