
Havana, Feb 25.- Star boxer Julio César La Cruz heads the team with which Cuba will face the men's segment of the qualifying tournament for the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.
The event will take place from March 11 to 16 in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, with competitions in seven divisions and the allocation of 63 quotas in each sex.
La Cruz (90 kg), double Olympic champion, will be joined by fellow gold medalist at that level ErislandyÁlvarez (65 kg) and the 2023 world silver medalists SaidelHorta (60 kg) and Fernando Arzola (+90 kg).
The contingent is completed by two-time world bronze medalist Alejandro Claro (55 kg), YunierSorsano (70 kg), and KeilorGarcía (80 kg), head coach EulisesPouyout informed JIT.
The team led by him also includes coaches Rolando Acebal and José Ramón Amador, doctor Rafael Lerena, and physiotherapist DailenisEneida Paz.
Men's quotas will be distributed as follows: 11 in 55 kg, 11 in 60 kg, 11 in 65 kg, nine in 70 kg, seven in 80 kg, seven in 90 kg, and seven in over 90 kg.
The Central American and Caribbean event is scheduled from July 24 to August 8, and Cuban boxing will take it on with the challenge of surpassing the results that left dissatisfaction in the San Salvador 2023 edition.
On that occasion, they only added two titles, contributed by La Cruz and Arzola, the same number of silver medals, and five bronze medals. Their women debuted in competitions of this type and returned home with one silver and one bronze. (Text and photo: JIT)
