Sustainable agriculture in Camagüey: A model integrating production and community

Camagüey, March 12th - Agriculture in Camagüey, one of Cuba's most fertile regions, is going through a crucial moment in its development. Through sustainable practices and the implementation of innovative strategies, the sector seeks not only to guarantee food security but also to promote a model of institutional management that integrates the needs of the community.

The Camagüey branch of the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF, by its acronym in Spanish) plays a fundamental role in this process, supporting initiatives that foster the inclusion of a gender perspective in agriculture and promoting a more equitable environment for all actors involved.

Odalis Marrero Vallina, president of the organization in Camagüey, highlighted that the gender strategy has been a key tool for empowering women in the countryside. "ACTAF has promoted training sessions and workshops that allow women to acquire technical skills and leadership in their communities, which has favored an increase in agricultural production. These actions not only generate a positive impact on the local economy but also contribute to building a more sustainable future, by promoting the active participation of all genders in decision-making and resource management," she stated.

In the 13 municipalities of the province, many young people are beginning to take on active roles in agriculture, driven by a vision of innovation and sustainability. Initiatives that promote urban agriculture and agroecology are awakening the interest of the new generations, who see working the land not only as an economic opportunity but also as a commitment to the well-being of their communities and the environment.

Ultimately, agriculture in Camagüey is moving towards a future where sustainability and equity are fundamental pillars for achieving comprehensive and lasting development. (Maykel Torres La Rosa/Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
