Fidel Castro's legacy praised in Brazil

Brasilia, March 13.- Diplomats and members of leftist political parties, social movements, and solidarity organizations highlighted here today the legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro (1926-2016).

As Prensa Latina observed, the gathering at the Teatro de losBancarios was an opportune moment to evoke the political thought of the most universal of Cubans and reflect on the importance of unity among progressive forces in the face of current challenges.

The celebration was attended by ambassadors and representatives from the Caribbean island, Venezuela, Iran, and the Polisario Front of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, who were joined by young Brazilian university students and people of revolutionary ideas from Colombia, Bolivia, and Morocco.

"We are holding this event in a very dangerous context for all nations of the world, and especially for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean. The challenges we face are highly complex," said the Cuban ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo.

In his speech, following several other speakers, Cairo recalled Fidel Castro's analytical capacity and his early warnings about the risks of the hegemonic behavior of the great powers.

He stressed that the revolutionary leader's ideas remain fully relevant in the contemporary international scenario, characterized by geopolitical conflicts, economic tensions, and disputes over the sovereignty of peoples.

For the Cuban ambassador, Fidel Castro was a moral and political giant who turned his country into a benchmark of resistance and international solidarity, and a defender of multilateralism, social justice, and Latin American integration.

He also mentioned the Commander-in-Chief's visits to Brazil and highlighted his participation in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Furthermore, Cairo denounced the tightening of the United States' policy against Cuba, particularly the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that has lasted nearly six and a half decades.

He noted that recent measures adopted by Washington, including the threat to impose additional tariffs on countries that supply oil to the largest of the Antilles, are part of a strategy aimed at causing economic and social difficulties in that nation.

Faced with this scenario, the ambassador emphasized the importance of international solidarity as a fundamental tool to counter external pressures.

He also stressed that Cuba will continue to defend its independence and maintain its historic commitment to the causes of those fighting for freedom, including the Palestinians and the Sahrawis.

Inspired by the legacy of Fidel Castro, he suggested, peoples must strengthen unity in the face of the threats they encounter in the current international context. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
