International Antifascist Conference for the Sovereignty of Peoples, Brazil, politics, intellectuals

International Antifascist Conference being prepared in Brazil

Brasilia, March 12th - The organization of the 1st International Antifascist Conference for the Sovereignty of Peoples is gaining momentum in Brazil through preparatory meetings aimed at articulating political and intellectual networks against the far right.

According to its organizers, the event, scheduled from March 26th to 29th in the city of Porto Alegre, represents a broader effort to build a space for coordination among social movements, progressive parties, trade unions, and collectives concerned about the resurgence of authoritarian currents in the world.

Press reports indicate that the meeting should bring together over 250 intellectuals, political leaders, and representatives of social movements to discuss the characteristics of contemporary fascism and develop common response strategies.

Israel Dutra, from the national leadership of the Socialism and Liberty Party, stated that the current preparation process reflects the scope the call is acquiring, with prior meetings taking place in different locations across the South American giant.

In this regard, he mentioned the recent meeting in the city of São Paulo and announced similar ones in RibeirãoPreto, Fortaleza, Natal, Florianópolis, and the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, the state whose capital is Porto Alegre.

In Dutra's view, the multiplication of these pre-conferences evidences the interest of political and social organizations in broadening the debate on the threats represented by authoritarianism and neo-fascism on the global stage.

Such meetings function as spaces for political education, experience exchange, and organization of delegations that will participate in the international event.

In this way, activists, academics, trade unionists, and members of popular movements come together, seeking to strengthen cooperation between entities from different countries.

Among the forces involved in the prior meetings are peasant organizations, anti-racist collectives, feminist groups, unions, and citizen platforms promoting the defense of social and civil rights.

The fight against racism, feminism, and demands linked to the world of work—issues considered fundamental pillars of democratic resistance—are also recurring themes in the analyses.

For the conference promoters, building an international antifascist network is key in a context marked by the rise of hate speech and geopolitical conflicts which, in their view, fuel the advance of ultra-conservative forces. (Text and Photo: Prensa Latina)
