Wrestler Ángela Álvarez reigns at the Yekaterinburg University Festival


Havana, Aug 24.- The wrestlers today joined the conquest of medals for Cuba at the 2023 Yekaterinburg International University Sports Festival, in Russia.

Ángela Álvarez Martínez, Central Caribbean champion in San Salvador 2023, secured the crown in the 57 kg, while Yainelis Sanz took the bronze medal in the 55 kg.

Wilber Sánchez Amita, in charge of the Island's representation in this sport, confirmed to JIT that both athletes held three bouts and were physically and technically very well.

He also pondered the level of the contest, in which Russian wrestlers from high-level universities with development programs in this sport predominate.

Sánchez Amita, glory of this sport in Cuba, pointed out that Ángela and Sanz benefit greatly from this competition, as they prepare for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

Two other gladiators from the Island remain to compete, in freestyle, Giannis Garzón and Yosenki Castañeda.

The Cuban delegation, mostly made up of students from the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences, also adds medals in judo and diving.

In addition, the futsal team starred in the international premiere of Cuban women in this discipline. Only our representatives in rhythmic gymnastics remain to compete: Gretel Mendoza and Keyla Miranda. (Text and photo: JIT)
