The war in Syria destroyed 70 percent of its industries

Damascus, 1st. Dec. - The Syrian government affirmed today that the terrorist and economic war against the country had disastrous effects in all sectors, with 70 percent of its industrial park destroyed.

Quoted by the local press, the permanent representative of this Arab nation to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Vienna, Hassan Khaddour, revealed before the Twentieth UN General Conference for Industrial Development that Syrian industries suffered losses estimated at around 60 billion dollars.

We have also lost around a million jobs due to destruction in the industry, agriculture, commerce and services sectors, he explained.

According to the diplomat's statements, the number of damaged private industrial plants registered only in the provinces of Damascus, Aleppo, Hama and Homs amounts to about 4,200, while 49 factories in the state sector went out of production.

Syria needs at least 210 billion dollars to recover its industrial production wheel to what it was before the war, he pointed out.

On the other hand, the official referred to the extensive damage caused by the devastating earthquake that devastated the country on February 6 and the disastrous impacts it had on the Syrian people and on all sectors, including the industrial sector, which is the vital artery of national development.

Syria faces several challenges and obstacles that paralyze the development process, and at the forefront of these challenges are the negative effects resulting from sanctions, the suffocating economic crisis and the imposition of unprecedented unilateral coercive economic measures, Khaddour lashed out.

He explained the Syrian government's efforts to address these challenges as issuing legislation that meets the emerging needs of society, in line with the requirements of sustainable development. (Text and photo: PL)
