Havana triathlon qualifier for Asunción-2025

Havana, January 13.- The ninth edition of the Havana Triathlon will be held on February 16, and will offer places for the Central American and Caribbean area, heading to the 2nd Junior Pan American Games Asunción-2025.

The tournament also guarantees points for the ranking of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo-2026, in the Dominican Republic, according to Alejandro Puerto, president of the Cuban Federation of this sport, told Granma.

In all its editions, this event has had the participation of world-class triathletes, including medalists in events around the world and in the Olympic Games, which is why the World Triathlon (WT) has entrusted the event with the possibility of granting classifications to an event multiple and add points for another, Puerto confirmed.

He added that "the participation of more than 120 athletes is expected, mainly from countries in the area, and in the case of the triathletes from home they will have the mission of achieving four places for the Junior event in Asunción, and for the older ones the objective is add points for the ranking.

Among the new details, the 2025 edition will change the route, as it will not have the finish line in front of the Hotel Nacional. The three disciplines will take place at the Marina Hemingway, swimming, cycling and running, with the aim of making it a little more attractive, since it is a qualifier, explained the President of the Cuban Triathlon Federation.

Specifically, there will be 12 places available for men and the same number for women, heading to the Junior Pan American Games. According to the calendar published on the WT website, that same day, in Punta del Este, Uruguay, another 12 tickets will be made available, for the men's sector and for the girls' sector, corresponding to the South American area.

Between the months of February and March, places will be assigned to the host country of the Junior Pan American Games, while the United States, Canada and Mexico will define their candidates in qualifying competitions organized by their respective national federations.

For the Asunción-2025 qualifier, each national federation may ensure a maximum of two athletes of both sexes, up to 21 years of age (turned until December 31, 2025). The places obtained will be for the country, not for the individual athlete.

Nations that manage to qualify two men and two women will be able to participate in the mixed relay events, and it is mandatory that all four participate in the individual event.

Paraguay, as the host country for the Asunción Games, already has two places guaranteed in each gender, and if there are vacant places due to not being able to fill the places, Américas Triathlon will be in charge of assigning them. (Text and Photo: Granma)
