Havana, April 14 – Cuban Ambassador to Australia Tanieris Diéguez described the Cuban music concert held at the Sydney Opera House today as an opportunity to build bridges between our peoples through culture.
The diplomat said she felt excited, not only because of the massive attendance of the public and their enthusiasm, but also because of having the opportunity for Cuban music to return to this prestigious artistic institution after several years of absence.
The concert, held the day before, was organized by the Artists for Peace group in collaboration with the Cuban Embassy. The group is committed to offering “an unforgettable evening with captivating melodies and contagious rhythms that will make your heart dance” and allow attendees to discover the spirit of Cuba.
Cuban music—the organizers described when promoting the performance—is a world of rhythm, soul, and innovation, shaped by iconic figures such as Miguel Matamoros, Ernesto Lecuona, Compay Segundo, and other masters.
Matamoros, creator of the famous Cuban son, revolutionized his country's music with timeless pieces like "Lágrimas Negras," which fuses African and Spanish influences into an irresistible sound, while Lecuona mixed classical music with Cuban rhythms in masterpieces such as “Malagueña”.
They also highlighted Compay Segundo as a master of Cuban son who revitalized the genre worldwide through the Buena Vista Social Club, with classics like the internationally renowned "Chan Chan."
"These legends, with their pioneering works, shaped Cuban music into a universal language of passion, energy, and feeling that still resonates today," it emphasizes.
