United States, Somalia, famine, humanitarian aid

Millions of Somalis heading for famine after end of US aid

Mogadishu, July 10 – The suspension of aid promised by the United States to African countries mired in crisis threatens nearly five million Somalis with starvation, warns a UN report released here today.

Australian billionaire Elon Musk urged US President Donald Trump to shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which led to the suspension of humanitarian aid to African countries.

This year alone, at least 1.8 million Somali children will suffer from malnutrition, and 4.6 million people will lack food, says the report by UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

The document adds that U.S. drug assistance to 150 health centers decreased by 50 percent compared to last year, meaning hundreds of thousands of patients lack access to medications.

In the euphoria over his electoral victory, Trump appointed Musk a sort of super-advisor for reducing the size of government.

Among the first casualties of what Musk called "the lawnmower" was USAID, whose functions moved to the State Department on the 1st of this month, clearly unable to fulfill the commitments made by the defunct agency, which also served to fund groups opposing governments that were hurtful for Washington.
