Camagüey, August 28 - Unlike previous occasions, Cuba will field a boxing team with limited prospects for success at the World Championship, where the greatest hopes rest on Camagüey boxers Julio César La Cruz and Erislandy Álvarez.
The national team will travel to the English city of Liverpool, where, in order to strengthen certain divisions lacking strong representatives, they have decided to place La Cruz in the over-92-kilogram category, a move that some consider challenging for the veteran athlete, as it is not his “natural” weight.
The rationale provided by the coaches has some justification, given that there is currently no athlete with the necessary conditions to achieve notable performance.
The lineup also includes Nelson Williams in the 90-kilogram category, who is currently on the rise and has gradually established himself as the top competitor in this weight class.
The team is completed by Alejandro Claro (50 kilograms), Rolando Martínez (53), Erislandy Álvarez (63), Jorge Cuéllar (70), and Jorge Soto (80).
The boxing event in the “musical” English city will take place from September 4 to 14. (Text: Gilberto Rodríguez Rivero/ Contributor to Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Archive)
