Camagüey, September 16, 1895, 130 years, Jimaguayú, Magna Carta of the Republic in Arms

Constitution of Jimaguayú, one of three celebrated in insurgent fields of Camagüey

Camagüey, Sep 13 - On September 16, 1895, 130 years ago, the Magna Carta of the Republic in Arms was approved in the fields of Jimaguayú, preceded by that of Guáimaro on April 10, 1869, and added to by the legislative document of La Yaya, all of which were born in the insurgent camps of El Camagüey.

With the constitution of Jimaguayú, a Government Council was established with administrative and legislative prerogatives, while providing full autonomy to the military command, and what José Martí expressed two weeks before his fall in combat was materialized: "The free Army, and the country, as a country..."

The choice of the meeting site was a tribute to the Camagüey hero Ignacio Agramonte, who fell in combat in these lands of the south-central province.

The presidency of Cuba fell to Salvador Cisneros Betancourt, a position he would assume for the second time, refers the rich history in Mambi messages.

Enrique Loynaz del Castillo, author of the Invading Anthem with his clear thinking, capacity for erudition, and chronicler described that moment:

"The sun is strong over the fields of Jimaguayú and the clarity full of the historic plain. There are barely a few houses of guano and palm boards that serve the same purpose for resting as for the toughest debates...

This constitution of Jimaguayú was inscribed in September 2015 in the National Registry of the Memory of the World Program of UNESCO. (Enrique Atiénzar Rivero/Collaborator of Radio Cadena Agramonte)
