Cuba ranks fifth in the UNCAF U-16 football tournament

Havana, Oct. 10 - The Cuban national soccer team participating in the UNCAF U-16 Tournament in Guatemala 2025 finished in fifth place.

After finishing third in Group A, with a victory over Guatemala, a draw with Nicaragua, and a defeat against Panama, they challenged for that spot against El Salvador, whom they defeated 2-1.

The Caribbean led in the score on minute 37, and before the end of the first half they doubled the lead. Goals scored by Yankarlos Iglesias and Iván Darío Pacheco.

El Salvador narrowed the gap late in the game but failed to equalize, attempting to force penalties.

A more organized Cuban team emerged, with greater control of the game and a tactical understanding that they should wait well in defense and focus on quick transitions.

The talent of players like Iglesias himself, who also scored in the victory over Guatemala, worried La Selecta's defense, which was unable to break down the Cuban defense to turn the score around.

The Cubans say goodbye to this event with a balance of two wins, a draw and a loss in what is a good start for the World Cup ranking in the under-17 category. (Text and photo: JIT)
