Camagüey, baseball team, visitor, team, Holguín

Holguín is the new stop for Los Toros

Camagüey, Oct. 14 -The predictions gave them little chance of victory, but at least two successes were achieved by the Camagüey province's baseball team in their recent matchup against the Santiago de Cuba Wasps, when they face the Holguín team, also as the visitor, starting today.

The Camagüey team had a very active series with the Santiago team in offensive terms, although in the final game they had to endure a real thrashing of 20 runs, as the pitching was little more than defenseless, and as a consequence, they withstood the strong assault from the Eastern squad.

It is precisely the pitching area, as predicted, that is the classic Achilles' heel, perhaps the fundamental reason why the Camagüey team does not have a better position in the championship standings, with only 15 wins in 30 games.

However, having the best team average (.346) in the tournament, as well as the lead in hits (.346), is of little use if there hasn't been consistent support from the pitchers, who, of course, and without justification, have a long way to go given the predominant youth.

As if that weren't enough, they are the second-highest home run hitter (32) in the tournament, only surpassed by Santiago de Cuba (56), and they hold the same position in runs scored (204), while sharing the same spot with Matanzas in RBIs (185).

They are also second in doubles hit (54), behind Industriales (59), the leader.

Starting pitchers are batting .282, allowing 70 earned runs, and their average is 4.33.

The opponent, the Holguin cubs, are batting 323, and have 25 home runs, with Michael Gorguet (412), Lázaro Cedeño (404) and Luis Domínguez (370) as their main hitters so far.

Michel Cabrera is their starting pitcher, with 4 and 1, followed by Wilson Paredes (3-1), who contribute to to the formation being placed in fifth place, thanks to their 18 wins and 11 losses.

And by the way, shortstop Alexander Ayala managed to become the shortstop with the most home runs in our national classics, surpassing 170, a baseball figure previously held by the now-retired Holguín player Jorge Cruz.
