Havana, October 30 - Pitcher Liván Moinelo from Pinar del Río won his fifth professional baseball title today as the SoftBank Hawks defeated the Hanshin Tigers in the Japan Series, in a five-game playoff series.
The Fukuoka franchise finished off their opponents this Thursday after eleven hard-fought innings at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya before more than 41,000 spectators.
The Hawks came from behind and turned the score around with consecutive home runs, one in the eighth inning with a man on base to tie the game at two runs, and the decisive one in the second extra inning to seal the 3-2 score.
With this victory, SoftBank secured the playoff series at 4-1 and claimed their twelfth championship in franchise history, only surpassed in Japanese baseball by the Yomiuri Giants (22 titles) and Seibu Lions (13 titles).
For the Cuban left-hander, this was his fifth experience in such a sensational achievement, having previously participated in 2017, when he joined the club, as well as in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
In the recently concluded Japanese postseason, Moinelo was the ace of the Hawks' pitching rotation and received the Most Valuable Player award in the Climax Series, which decided the Pacific League champion, the challenger of the Tigers, who are the Central League champions.
After seven seasons in the Hawks' bullpen, the left-hander from Vuelta Abajo was designated a starter, a decision by the coaching staff that confirmed his potential to pitch games with high effectiveness.
This year he made 24 starts, winning half of them. In 167 innings, he struck out 172 batters and posted a 1.46 ERA, the best earned run average among all pitchers in both leagues of the Japanese baseball tournament. (Source: ACN) (Photo: Cubadebate)
