Mexico City, Dec. 3 - Cubans and Mexicans paid tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, during a ceremony commemorating the ninth anniversary of his death and the 69th anniversary of the Granma yacht landing.

Speaking at the event, the Cuban ambassador to Mexico, Marcos Rodríguez, highlighted Fidel Castro's profound legacy, which, in his view, constitutes "an ideological shield in our people's resistance against the aggressions of our enemies."

The diplomat emphasized the solidarity instilled by the historic leader and maintained that history confirms that only this principle among nations—cooperation and mutual support—can save the future of humanity.

“In an adverse international context, where imperial doctrines of hegemony that threaten world sovereignty and peace are being reinstated, Fidel's ideas are more relevant than ever as a sure guide for building a better world,” he stated.

Before representatives from the embassies of Vietnam and Iran, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutions, in addition to legislators, Cubans residing in Mexico, and members of the solidarity movement, Rodríguez emphasized the significance of the Granma landing in the Caribbean nation.

“The young expeditionaries, willing to be free—as Fidel said—or martyrs, arrived on their beloved island, marked by the fraternity of a brotherly people,” he said, referring to the support received in Mexico by the fighters, who departed from a port in that North American country.

He mentioned the solidarity also expressed by Mexico after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and its permanent willingness to extend its hand in difficult times of natural disasters, pandemics or blockades.

Furthermore, he denounced the impact of the intensified economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island for more than 60 years, which constitutes the main obstacle to the recovery and development of the Cuban economy.

Speaking, Olivia Garza, vice president of the José Martí Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, emphasized that remembering Fidel Castro is not an act of nostalgia, but an exercise in reaffirmation, and that this means drawing from his legacy guidance for current challenges.

“At this time when the decadent empire is deploying its forces in the Caribbean, Fidel’s voice resonates more strongly than ever. We do not remember his voice in silence; we invoke it as a standard in the battle of ideas,” she asserted.

For her part, Aline Pérez, of the Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, noted that 2026 will mark the centennial of the birth of the historical leader of the Revolution, and that they will carry out 100 actions aimed at spreading his legacy throughout this North American nation.
