Cuba presents its commitment to child protection before UNICEF

Havana, Feb 12.- The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ernesto SoberónGuzmán, presented the Cuba-UNICEF Country Program 2026-2030 during the First Regular Session of the organization's Executive Board, highlighting that it constitutes a strategic cooperation framework to strengthen the well-being of girls, boys, and adolescents.

According to the Mission's website, Soberón explained to those present that the document is the result of joint work between Cuba and the United Nations Children's Fund, aligned with the United Nations Framework for Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Cuba 2026-2030, and with the National Plan for Economic and Social Development until 2030, with an emphasis on comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable development.

The diplomat also noted that the Program is based on the commitment of the largest of the Antilles to the full enjoyment of children's rights, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic, the Family Code, the Comprehensive Policy for Children, Adolescences and Youths, and the innovative Code for Children, Adolescences and Youths.

Its implementation, added SoberónGuzmán, will contribute to preserving the social achievements attained, ensuring access to essential supplies, and mobilizing national and international alliances that support economic recovery and the comprehensive well-being of the new generations.

Likewise, the Permanent Representative denounced that these efforts are affected by the tightened economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States and by measures aimed at hindering the arrival of fuel to the country, with direct impacts on transportation, hospitals, and the functioning of schools.

Finally, Cuba requested the support of the members of the UNICEF Executive Board for the approval of the 2026-2030 Country Program, reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, international cooperation, and the protection of the rights of girls, boys, and adolescents; which obtained broad international backing, with the US as the sole vote against, in total isolation.
