Fine Arts exhibits heritage of humorous drawings

Havana, July 10 – Next Thursday, July 17th, at 11:00 a.m., the Antonio Rodríguez Morey Information Center gallery in the Cuban Art Building of the National Museum of Fine Arts will inaugurate the exhibition "Hall of Fame (I)," considered a new opening for the institutional treasures of the Humorous Drawing collection.

Dedicated this time to personal caricature, the exhibition brings together 18 pieces—17 drawings (on paper) and one sculpture—created between 1949 and 1981 by five Cuban artists who are vital to the history of this expression: Francisco Sierra, Jesús González de Armas, Tony López, Ramón Arroyo (Arroyito), and Juan Eduardo David Posada.

The curator of the collection, Yahíma Marina Rodríguez Pupo, told the Cuban News Agency that the exhibition brings together personal caricatures to prominent avant-garde painters and 20th-century intellectuals and writers.

All the pieces have a vital imprint on Cuban culture and deserve to be relocated, cared for and revisited; in addition to being integrated into an exhibition that textually handles the thoughts of each of these personalities as a kind of tribute to their contributions, she added.

Thus, in Hall of Fame (I), Eduardo Abela, Amelia Peláez, Fidelio Ponce, Wifredo Lam, Nicolás Guillén, José Lezama Lima, Jorge Mañach, and Alejo Carpentier, among others, are recreated with a shrewd eye, eloquence, and humor, preserving not only their physiognomy but also the character, gestures, and aura of their era.

Rodríguez Pupo emphasized that personal caricature is a language, a branch of graphic humor that utilizes expressiveness and visual synthesis; and in this sense, I believe these are works of high aesthetic value that can be of great interest to viewers. (Text and photo: ACN)
