Havana, October 28. - Cubans commemorate today the 66th anniversary of the physical disappearance of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, known on the island as the Hero of Yaguajay.
Also known as the Lord of the Vanguard, he lost his life on October 28, 1959, when the plane he was traveling in fell into the water.
Of a cheerful and jovial character, the Hero of Yaguajay was a man of proven patriotism, hence his willingness to enlist in the Granma yacht expedition that departed from Tuxpan, Mexico, on November 25, 1956, with 82 combatants.
Once the liberation war began, Camilo Cienfuegos, born on February 6, 1932, in Havana, began to stand out for his qualities as one of the most prominent soldiers of the Rebel Army, in which he reached the rank of commander.
Between August and October 1958, he led an invading column from the Sierra Maestra toward the center of the country, where he successfully led several military actions.
After the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, and until his regrettable physical disappearance on October 28 of that year, Camilo Cienfuegos was one of the most prestigious leaders of the largest of the Antilles. (Text and photo: PL)
