Cuba to publicly assess Hurricane Melissa damage in the East

Havana, October 29 - Cuba will assess the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa today after it passed through the eastern part of the country in a meeting led by the President of the National Defense Council, Miguel Díaz-Canel, which will be broadcast on television.

The first damage assessment meeting will be broadcast on the news program Mesa Redonda at 5:30 p.m. local time from the Palace of the Revolution (headquarters of government), according to the Cuban Presidency website.

During the meeting, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba will also connect via videoconference with authorities from the affected areas.

The program, which will be broadcast live, includes reports from the most affected provinces and an update on the country's weather situation and the measures being implemented to begin the recovery, the source specified.

Hurricane Melissa began its exit from Cuban territory through the municipality of Banes, in Holguín province, after crossing the eastern region and weakening to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the Institute of Meteorology reported today.

Images broadcast by Cuban television and social media show damage to infrastructure, homes, basic services, and productive sectors, especially in Santiago de Cuba and Holguín, where severe flooding and fallen trees have hampered communications and transit. So far, no loss of life has been reported.

Melissa reached its maximum intensity on Tuesday in the North Atlantic, with sustained winds of up to 295 km/h and a central pressure of 892 hPa, becoming the third most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, according to historical records. (Source: Prensa Latina)
