Visit of North American educators continues in Camagüey


Camagüey, March 21.- Participants in the event Investigative searches between North American and Cuban educators visited the Máximo Gómez Báez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE), with the purpose of learning about the attention received by the talented students who are trained there. center.

Lázaro Vázquez Velázquez, director of the Provincial Training Center for High Academic Performance (CEPARA), commented that the currently enrolled students are recruited from Primary and Basic Secondary education to join the classrooms of that institution.

The members of CEPARA, he said, are mainly prepared in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Geography, and, he specified, Spanish, History and English were also incorporated.

He pointed out that the nine subjects have national contests, while in the case of the six basic sciences they contribute to the national preselection of Cuban teams to international events.

When learning about the center's work, Ebony Terrell Shockley, professor at the University of Maryland in Washington, said that throughout her life she has had the opportunity to visit several countries, however, she highlighted the special attention that adolescents receive in Cuba and the sense of community perceived in Camagüey schools.

“You are wonderful, as is your school and city, and I think what you are doing here is incredible,” said Terrel Shockley.

During the dialogue, the visitors asked about the rigor of the IPVCE entrance exams, the daily dynamics of that campus, the extracurricular activities and the types of history they study.

In this regard, María Claudia Torres Mojena, an eleventh grade student, detailed the main requirements to enter the school, for which Mathematics, Spanish and History tests are mandatory and optionally, Chemistry, Biology or Physics are evaluated.  

Regarding the school environment, Anayaris Bértoa Rodríguez, an eleventh grade student, mentioned the different recreational, cultural and sports activities that take place at the IPVCE, where he believes that unforgettable moments are experienced, they improve as people and learn more about life.

A similar meeting took place at the Nicolás Guillén Batista Pedagogical School, where the foreign delegation investigated the With infinite love Project, made up of 100 students and in which topics of interest linked to responsible sexuality, the consequences of the consumption of drugs and racial equality, indicated Yisel Cisneros, coordinator of that initiative.

Upon receiving them, Idilma Columbié Espada, director of the aforementioned school, said that currently enrollment exceeds 1,300 students in 13 specialties that allow the training of new teachers for early childhood, primary schools, basic secondary schools and artistic education.

As a wonderful opportunity to share experiences with Camagüey educators, Mark B. Ginsburg, from the University of Maryland, described this type of meeting, and in particular, he stated that when interacting with early childhood and primary school students in the municipality from Sierra de Cubitas, felt the source of energy that they transmit.

In his transit through almost all the provinces of the country, he has discovered that Cuba is like his second home, to which he has returned time and again as a member of the Venceremos Brigade, Pastors for Peace or when he has attended the parades through the International Workers' Day.
